With the introductory warning “Alert! The tracks you about to here are made entirely using alarms!” one might expect Rajeev Basu’s EEP EEP EEP EP to sound, well, alarming, like something from German industrial terrors Einstürzende Neubauten. However, the musical results of Basu’s concept are fairly relaxing, with his coconspirators producing ambient soundscapes and playful hip hop from electronically manipulated source samples of car alarms and horns, fire alarms, alarm clocks, oven timers, car horns, fire truck and police sirens, etc.

As Basu explains his process to The Creators Project:

The thinking came from, what’s the last thing people would want to listen to? I then worked backwards from that. I tried to figure out a way to turn alarms into music that people might actually enjoy. It felt like a good challenge.

We’ll see if Basu can render his “Rat Table” concept into something soft and cuddly.
