Pirelli Unveils Its 2012 Calendar

By Laura Feinstein on December 7, 2011

Taking the typical girlie mag to new artistic and luxurious heights for the past 39 years, the Pirelli calender tradition continued yesterday at an exclusive press conference where the newest addition was unveiled. A yearly photographic treat reserved only for Pirelli Tire’s most elite and important clients, the calender is traditionally shot by some of the top names in photography- with past visionaries including Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Bruce Weber, Karl Lagerfield, and Robert Freeman (just to name a few). This year the star snapper was Mario Sorrenti, the one time boyfriend of 2012 Pirelli model Kate Moss, who in addition to shooting her iconic Calvin Klein Obsession campaign has also been a major editorial draw for some of the biggest magazines and fashion houses in the world.

Shot on the enchanted island of Corsica, the 2012 calender is aptly titled Swoon, as its models (which include Natasha Poly, Lara Stone, Milla Jovovich) are all in various stages of repose- draped over the rocky and and sun-drenched landscape. Answering questions at the early morning meet-and-greet held at Gustavino’s, Sorrenti discussed his process for choosing the models, many of whom he’s know for almost his entire career, as well as what it was like to be part of this prestigious project. In conjunction a “making-of” short film was also screened for the select international press, showing insight into the artist’s creative process as well as glowing testimonials from the featured models. Though the calender must be given and can’t actually be bought, we were able to access a few of the images shown below for your viewing pleasure.
