TV Lets You Reach In And Play With On-Screen Objects

Portals is a successfully funded tech project on Kickstarter that allows users to reach into a television box and interact with objects in real time. Created by Jayne Vidheecharoen, a media student at the Art Center College of Design in California, Portals aims to be a gateway between reality and a parallel fantasy world.

Vidheecharoen demonstrates a Portal prototype by using Google Streetview. Through utilizinga  green screen and also touch screen capabilities, Vidheecharoen uncannily picks up a miniature person with her hand and even navigates the streets by sliding her finger on the road.

Although this experimental design project is not meant for commercial purposes yet, Vidheecharoen speculates that there are “a ton of potential ways people might use these boxes, from building entire parallel worlds to cross country puppet shows.”
