Tremendous growth sees this country overtaking the United States.
Ask a group of people which country might have the largest online population and most of them would probably guess the U.S. However, due to the tremendous growth over the last few years, China has over-taken the U.S. with nearly half a billion internet users. More than one in five netizens are Chinese and spend on average as much time online per week as Americans.
The data also suggests that Internet usage in China differs from the U.S. In China, the top online applications are instant messengers, whereas in the U.S., main communication channels tend to be social networks. With tight bans on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter in China, Chinese netizens tend to turn to portals and online message boards instead.
