A Y Combinator-backed company has been helping businesses feed their employees by making their lunch decisions quick and painless. ZeroCater provides lists of caterers, food trucks, and even high-quality restaurants to companies and takes care of ordering the food for them.
ZeroCater’s mission is to make lunches at the office simple and easy. All companies need to do is to give the time, number of people, and other dietary restrictions or preferences, and ZeroCater orders the food from a rotation of its list of vendors or restaurants, chefs, and caterers. The companies then rate the meals so that ZeroCater can adjust orders based on the feedback from their clients.
The company started in San Francisco, but is now expanding in New York. Their focus is not only breaking into the food and catering market, but also trying to infuse a culture of eating together in the workplace. ZeroCater believes in building good relationships over food and hopes to bring that kind of culture into other companies. Most office workers are used to eating at their desk and ZeroCater hopes to help change things by encouraging colleagues to eat together during lunch time. That is why the company targets a lot of caterers that provide buffet-style meals as opposed to single order meals that are delivered directly to employees at their desks.
With its New York expansion, ZeroCater has grown to 34 employees with a possibly of growing even bigger since they are currently hiring for their New York operations.
