+POOL wants to make it possible for everybody to swim in the water-filtering swimming pool in NYC’s river, and a newly launched Kickstarter campaign enables the public to reserve a tile and own a piece of the project. The Tile By Tile campaign places backers’ names or messages on one of the 70,000 tiles that will cover the pool’s surface and also gives them first dibs to check out the completed project.
The +POOL is slated for a 2016 opening and if every tile is claimed, the entire $15 million construction budget will be funded, making it the largest kickstarted civic project to date. The typical +POOL tile is available for $199 (early birds can get one for $149) and can be engraved with a name or message of up to 50 characters.
The tile will be sent to backers this summer, with a replica placed on the future +POOL, permanently etching backers’ names on the swimming pool. If the first 1,400 tiles are reserved on Kickstarter and the goal of $250,000 is reached, the team will be able to build a mini prototype of the +POOL.
This ‘Float Lab’ will allow the team to test all the filtration materials in real river conditions in the East River this August. Click through to see pictures of the +POOL and check out the campaign video below:
