DIY Neurosurgery Kit Lets People Create A Cyborg Cockroach [Video]

DIY Neurosurgery Kit Lets People Create A Cyborg Cockroach [Video]

Create an app-controllable RoboRoach with just a little surgery and circuitry.

Ross Brooks

RoboRoach is the world’s first commercially available cyborg – it allows you to fuse insect and machine into a living organism that you can control with your mobile phone.

The company behind this idea recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to gather funding for the next stage of development, as well as to develop educational materials. Pledging $100 or more will get you a surgery kit consisting of a PCB “backpack,” battery and three sets of electrodes. The companion app connects to your mobile via Bluetooth, allowing you to control the cockroach with a swipe of your finger. Pledge over $150 and you can even get 12 cockroaches to start your cyborg army.

RoboRoach involves a little bit of home surgery and might be uncomfortable for some, but it’s touted as an educational device as opposed to a simple toy. You can see the full instructions for turning a cockroach into a cyborg in the following video:
