Brands are capitalizing on the power of visualized online experiences. GE is an exemplary case study as the brand houses experiences on Instagram, Pinterest, and virtually any emerging social media site. They recently launched #GEInstaWalk, a real-time Instagram tour of GE’s jet engine testing facilities in Peebles, Ohio wherein all the images are generated by hand-picked influencers. This particular aviation facility is:
… where GE exposes the world’s most advanced jet engines to the world’s most advanced testing. There are currently eight test sites: two enclosed and six open. Four are capable of testing engines that produce up to 150,000 pounds of thrust. GE is currently testing aircraft engines that produce fewer emissions and make less noise. This facility is also home to the world’s largest jet engine, the GE90, affectionately known around these parts as ‘Mr. Big.’
Developed by The Barbarian Group, one of the campaign’s strategic purposes is to give consumers an insider’s view of how high tech depends on human labor. The shots are snapped by Instagram influencers and several GE aviation fans, and the project shows how GE is using Instagram to beautify the aviation industry – something typically seen as industrial and not very design-centric.
