Outer storage compartments along Dutch building allow for a more spacious interior.

Sara Boboltz

Mei Architecten en Stedenbouwers finished its latest project in Rotterdam with an unusual feature — storage compartments that cling to one side of the building like barnacles.

The architects built upon a power plant turned audio-visual production center to create the new multi-purpose complex containing offices, a supermarket, gym, apartments, and combined live-work space. Each of the 11 floors contains ten outer closets, built out of a synthetic material with a UV-resistant coating.
