The Theremin I/O is an app that lets users string together distinct notes using an iPhone’s camera and flash to create unique melodies. With a quick hand gesture, the photographic instruments on the mobile device will measure the light reflected off of the user’s hand and turn any iPhone into a music instrument that doesn’t require touch.

Developed by John Nordberg and Giosuè Russo, Theremin I/O features 8 sound presets – which can be controlled depending on the user’s preference – and customizable scales that enable musicians to experience music-making at its best.

If it is something you would like to test out, the app is available for download here. A MIDI upgrade is also offered for $5.99.

Here is a video that demonstrates how to operate Theremin I/O.
