‘Good Money’ is based on the concept that social influence is one of the most effective ways of changing people’s behavior. It was devised by Good Virus, who are stamping $1 and $5 bills with the phrase “This money has been used for good”. The experiment hopes that people will be motivated to spend the money on a good cause, like a charitable donation.

Marked Dollar Bills Rely On Social Influence To Inspire Change

Say the creators,

We want to see if the Good Virus effect plays out with money. We’re thinking that if say we give a few dollars to someone who needs food. Then once the money is in circulation, perhaps the next person who gets the bill will read the message and be inspired to spend it on a good cause too, and so on and so on…

The website offers a digital map for participants to track the experiment around the world. Those who find one of the marked bills can log the serial number and their location so everyone can see how it is working.
