Retail corporation Walmart recently revealed its Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience or WAVE concept delivery truck, which is the latest innovation in the company’s fleet efficiency program.
The WAVE truck prototype veers away from the typical boxy front design and is 20% more aerodynamic than the company’s current truck models. It has an aerodynamic design that resembles a futuristic fighter plane. The truck is powered by a prototype micro-turbine, range-extending series hybrid powertrain that can run on diesel, natural gas, biodiesel, and potentially other fuels still yet to be developed.
The cab of the trailer sits on top of the hybrid powertrain – a design that puts the driver’s seat right in the center of the car. The fifty-three feet long trailer is made almost entirely with carbon fiber, making it lighter than normal trucks. This not only allows the WAVE truck to carry more cargo, but also cuts down on unnecessary weight and increases fuel efficiency.
