Opening Ceremony, Spike Jonze Using NYFW as Theater Platform
One-act play set to showcase fashion brand's latest styles
New York Fashion Week is right around the corner, which means major fashion brands are gearing up to rip the runway. One such brand- Opening Ceremony- has garnered a reputation for showcasing conceptual productions for their fashion shows. The company has collaborated with director Spike Jonze in the past to create fashion capsules for two of his hit films, but this years Jonze will be partnering with Opening Ceremony for a different kind of production- a one-act play.
Instead of a conventional fashion show, Opening Ceremony will this year be using the runway as a theatrical platform. The play is the brainchild of Jonze, who will be co-writing it along with actor and screenwriter Jonah Hill; Jonze will also be serving as director. Though the storyline and original script are still being finalized, Opening Ceremony cofounder Humberto Leon says Hill will not be acting in the production, which will include both models and actors donning the looks from the fall collection.
In past years, Opening Ceremony has created a company-branded mini mall, featured a wall of surging chocolate, and threw a multi-level party with a performance by Lil Kim, but this upcoming Fashion Week will be the first time the brand has worked with Jonze since his Academy Award win for the film Her. The show is scheduled for September 7.
