Video: PSFK Presents Good Ideas In Advertising, Part II

Last week, PSFK and The Guardian presented a Good Ideas Salon at the Soho House in NYC, which focused on the past events, present issues and future possibilities of advertising. Moderated by George Parker of AdScam, the salon was split into two different panels.
The second part of the discussion features Dominico Vitale (Founder, PI&C), Gill Linton (Founder, The Joneses), and Alain Sylvain (Managing Director, RedScout), discussing the importance of creative strategy, the industry’s lack of connection with consumers, the use and over-use of terms such as “the big idea” and “branding”, and accountability.  Watch the discussion below, and see part [...]

Last week, PSFK and The Guardian presented a Good Ideas Salon at the Soho House in NYC, which focused on the past events, present issues and future possibilities of advertising. Moderated by George Parker of AdScam, the salon was split into two different panels.
Part one featured industry veterans Curvin O’ Reilly, Tom Messner (Bonaccolta Messner), and John Garland (Garland/Berjis Consulting), discussing the advent of holding companies, Saatchi & Saatchi, and the fact of the advertising profession remaining the same despite seismic changes to the media landscape. George Parker: Thoughts on Thursday

George Parker: Thoughts on Thursday

As I’m sure many of you know, I hosted two panels at the PSFK “Good Ideas” conference at the Soho House in New York last Thursday. The subject of the meeting was “Advertising.” Which, surprisingly, had never been dealt with as a stand-alone subject at any of the previous “Good Ideas” shindigs. The format was that there would be two panels, the first a bunch of old geezers, who had come up through the traditional BDA structure, and the second being more representative of the newer kinds of communications companies who are not wedded to the traditional way of doing [...]

Good Ideas in Media, Toronto: Asking the Hard Questions

Good Ideas in Media, Toronto: Asking the Hard Questions

Late in April, our friends in Toronto (Janet Jones and Capital C) hosted an honest and heated discussion about the transformative effects of social media and Internet technology on traditional media spaces—indeed, one of the more exciting salons we’ve participated in yet. The well rounded panel, featured members representing different facets of the media landscape: Mathew Ingram of Globe & Mail (print), Jesse Hirsh of the CBC (broadcast), Jonathan Lister of Google Canada (Internet), David Jones of Hill & Knowlton (PR) and moderator Tony Chapman of The Capital C (advertising and marketing).
Some of the critical points of discussion include:

How has [...]

Good Ideas In Collaboration Wrap-Up

Good Ideas In Collaboration Wrap-Up

Last Friday at the Art Directors Club in New York, Piers Fawkes of PSFK sat down for a panel discussion on contemporary collaboration with Mike Brown of Virgin Group, Ben Lerer, founder of Thrillist, Sam Lessin, CEO of drop.io, and Nate Westheimer, VP Product, anyClip.com & Organizer, NY Tech Meetup. The afternoon’s talk centered around creative collaboration in the realm of business and entrepreneurship, and how both creative individuals and business-oriented entities can profit from working around shared interests.

From the discussion emerged a common sentiment, introduced by Lerer, that smaller creative groups need to take advantage of and leverage what [...]

The Guardian’s Simon Waldman at Good Ideas Salon London

The Guardian's Simon Waldman at Good Ideas Salon London

At our Good Ideas Salon in London, Simon Waldman, head of digital at the Guardian, rounded out the day with a great discussion on the future of journalism and how the Guardian is adapting to a rapidly changing industry.
In his talk (which you can watch in full below), Simon presents ways the Guardian has transformed with the upheaval of old media models, choosing to embrace new approaches to storytelling, community building, and information gathering and sharing. Simon argues that the foundations of traditional media have been falling apart for years; the idea of centralized control of information started fading long [...]
