In partnership with Nissan, PSFK held an event on October 20, 2009 to discuss the future of Pure Living in Tokyo. Two conversations moderated by Piers Fawkes, founder of PSFK, were held with both an international and Japanese panel, covering topics that include sustainability, design, urban planning, technology and zero-emission mobility.

Left to right, the experts on the panel were Mark Dytham (Creative Catalyst, Partner at Klein Dytham architecture and Founder of Pecha Kucha), Peter Rojas (Technology Guru, Founder at gdgt), and Marc Alt (Green Visionary, Founder at Marc Alt + Partners).

The panel discussed a variety of ideas from resource sharing to product life cycles and different feedback mechanisms that can guide sustainable everyday behavior. They also fleshed out a new vision of electric cars as a kind of gadget and mobile battery, exploring how our relationship to cars is changing as they become a mobile infrastructure and more of a service rather than a product.

The experts on the panel (left to right) were Hiromi Matsubara (Green Media Activist, Co-founder, Greenz.jp), Rie Azuma (Lifestyle Architect, Azuma Architecture) sat beside an interpreter and Danny Choo (Japan Sub-Culture Authority, Mirai Inc., dannychoo.com).

The panel discussed bringing simplicity and a nature focus back to the forefront of design thinking as well as a return to physicality, face to face interactions and working with our hands. Service and resource sharing were also brought up as a viable way to decrease consumption.

In this video, Francois Bancon, Nissan’s General Manager, Marketing and Communication Group, Global Zero Emission Business Unit, took a few minutes to chat with the audience about Nissan’s vision for a zero-emission future.  Bancon openly admitted that Nissan doesn’t have all the answers to our future mobility issues, and urged the crowd to share their thoughts and insights.
