FLOW is the first smart, connected mobile accessory to track, monitor and reduce your exposure to air pollution indoors, outdoors and on the go.

With China’s air pollution crisis showing no signs of slowing down, and other industrializing cities around the world experiencing an increase in air pollution, start-ups are trying to address the negative effects before they become irreversible. From air quality community reporting app Hawa Badlo in India to anti-pollution scarves to special inhalers, a safety net of products are coming to the market to help people deal with the overwhelming problem. FLOW is next on the scene for personalized air quality tracking.

FLOW has three main functions—track, monitor and improve. It tracks indoor and outdoor pollution such as particle matter, dust, exhaust fumes, irritating gas, household chemicals, temperature and humidity. Monitoring by providing alerts, it offers directions that lead you away from a toxic area and advises you on the best time to go outside. Finally, as a user of FLOW you become part of a community that provides data that continuously improves the app, along with the transparency of polluted areas.

The device connects to an app, either Android or iOS, and as it collects information on your environment it sends that information back to Plume Labs. That data gets fed back into their AI based platform to help in future predictions. Currently the scale covers hundreds of cities in over sixty countries. FLOW imports real-time measurements from 12,000 morning stations, and global atmospheric, urban and weather data. The goal for the Plume Labs team is to deliver real-time block by block information on air quality.

The overall mission of Plume Labs is to make the air we breathe more transparent. FLOW is just one of their projects to achieve that goal. Plume Labs is planning to have the device rolled out in late 2017. In the meantime, beta testing with UK Crowdfunder supporters will help begin the process of crowd-sourcing essential data for the app.

Perhaps a future iteration of FLOW will see it integrated into an existing wearable or smart device, further expanding its use and adoption. That being said, let’s hope that the fundamental problem of pollution itself gets solved before we come to that.
