Airport gyms, yoga rooms and local organic eateries are just some of the new health and wellness features popping up at airports internationally

Passengers exiting cramped airplanes are finding respite through an increasing trend of recreational airport features. Flyers can now enjoy airport gyms and yoga rooms as newly implemented norms in airport amenities, in addition to balanced food options featuring local, organic meals. The ROAM Fitness gym at Baltimore Washington International Airport opened earlier this month and is the newest airport gym to hit the nation. The gym features free luggage storage, options for renting workout clothes/shoes, showers and an attendant who monitors guests’ flights and will even alert them if there’s a delay. The airport as well offers bike rentals and a 12.5-mile trail just outside the airport.

San Francisco International Airport opened its second yoga room in 2014 after the success and high visitation volume of its first. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has an in-house yoga studio as well where guests can utilize free mats, a walking path and two 55-foot staircases for extra cardio opportunities. Flyers heading to or from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport can stretch their legs on the airport’s 1.4 mile walking track.

Dietary options for frequent and novice travelers have also become an area of focus at airport locations internationally. In addition to two yoga rooms, SFI offers The Plant Cafe, where everything is made with local and organic ingredients as well as Napa Farms Market, Joe & the Juice and new vending machines offering organic, gluten-free and sugar-free snacks.

Locally sourced food with healthy menu options can further be found at Elephants Delicatessen at Portland International Airport all the way to French Meadow Bakery, accessible in four airports including Minneapolis, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Salt Lake City.

On top of convenient gym amenities and health conscious menu options, flyers catching international flights can enjoy luxury gym amenities around the world. For those stopping off in Dubai, guests can enjoy 24-hour gym amenities available for $13 USD an hour featuring private showers, men’s and women’s steam rooms, saunas and Jacuzzis. Swedish and shiatsu massages are also available.

The Kempinski Hotel Fit & Fly Spa centrally located in the Munich Airport features a 17-meter long daylight-filled pool. The airport further features an air conditioned gym with 130 square meters of equipment and personal trainers available upon request. On site amenities also include a jacuzzi, solarium and Finnish sauna and steam bath, plus onsite professional physiotherapists and massage therapists to provide massages to fatigued and jet-lagged travelers.

As individuals pursue health conscious routines, businesses have adapted, no different than the recent health conscious developments seen across airports worldwide. According to the International Air Transport Association, roughly 8 million people fly each and everyday. With millions of air travelers flying around the country and overseas and a growing national emphasis on health and wellness regimes, a refined focus on wellness travel may very well be the next normative trend in airport amenities.
