The effects of fake news are not only clearly felt in the United States, but also around the world. Politics are impacted both at the national and international level, leading to dire consequences. It is a huge concern because people’s beliefs and voting behaviors are being shaped by news that is completely untrue and outlandish. In an effort to alleviate this problem, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales started a project called the Wikitribune, a way to create a crowd-sourced solution and address those who spread fake news.

The Wikitribune is a news platform that allows journalists and volunteers to work together to produce clear, fact-checked news stories. By utilizing transcripts, videos, audio interviews, and a variety of other sources, participants will fact-check everything and present this information directly so stories are easily verified. Each and every article will be written and fact-checked by both journalists and other community members. The platform is also free to use and free from any advertisement in order to give access to anyone and ensure there are not any third party interests secretly embedded in. The platform hopes to gain monthly supporters who believe in honest journalism. For now, they are pre-selling monthly support packages. If they do not meet their goal of having enough funding to hire ten journalists, they plan on refunding all their current supporters.

The Wikitribune aims to be transparent, publishing how it operates and its financials consistently. Fake news spreads easily because people continue to share these eye-catching “stories” on their personal social media platforms. Although the behaviors of these individuals cannot be easily be changed by outside forces, it is important to reinforce what good journalism entails. The foundation of the Wikitribune is based on these core values, which includes reporting on what is true and ensuring that there is a platform that is trustworthy via true accountability.
