You might know women who can walk down the street in heels without missing a step—but what if you’re not one of them? It’s hard to find a great pair of high heels. They’re usually a little too tight, too loose, too wide, too narrow, and they rarely fall into that happy medium.

Most people’s feet also differ a little in size, with the dominant foot being slightly bigger. Research shows that nearly half of women wear shoes that don’t fit right, which can lead to all sorts of foot problems, including pain and deformities.

Wearing high heels every day can have an especially negative impact on women’s feet. Misshapenness is a common result toes get squashed into ill-fitting shoes. When shoes are too loose, they can cause issues with the ankle and foot bones.

Enter True Gault, an exciting new shoe company that uses an app to can scan your feet and design you a custom pair of heels that fit your feet perfectly. The app is simple to use, but for now, unfortunately, it’s only available for iPhone.

After downloading, the app prompts you to set up a profile. It asks you questions about your shoe size and width, medical issues, height, weight, favorite colors, favorite styles and more.

Using this information, the app leads customers to a selection of styles and materials. You can filter results by colors, heel height, style or fabric. Most of the heels range in price from $100 to $500 (not bad when you consider the fact that they’re totally customized).

The next step is to scan your feet to get exactly the right fit for your shoes. The app recommends standing on uncarpeted floor and using a piece of standard white letter paper to place your feet on so the scanner has a reference for size. The app displays a green light once it’s positioned correctly to capture the scan image.

Submitting your scan allows you to place your order. The app sends updates when your shoes have been made and shipped. You only have to scan your feet once to get a personal serial number, which can be applied to any future orders.

It’s not a cure for foot problems, and heels can still have damaging effects. However, it’s a much better alternative to the standard heels you’ll find on the market.

The company’s CEO Sandra Gault believes that this technology could change the way we wear high heels. “We’re going to be expanding through a direct sales model. There are lots of really cool things that are going to be coming. My vision is, in the near future, people will look back and say, ‘Can you believe how we used to buy shoes?'”

It’s a great business model for the shoe industry as well. True Gault shoes are created to order, so there’s no problem with leftover inventory. “If nobody buys it,” Gault told Democrat & Chronicle, “it doesn’t matter. We build to order. We do everything backwards to the shoe industry.”

Plus, customer satisfaction tends to be much higher since the shoes are perfectly formed to your feet. They’ll certainly be more comfortable than any other heels you purchase.
