Neutrogena, the skincare brand owned by Johnson & Johnson, wants to be on your smartphone in addition to your bathroom cabinet. The company released an iPhone app along with an attachable device, the SkinScanner, which allows you to scan your face for a detailed look into your skin issues and how to solve them.

The app, called Skin360, syncs up with the SkinScanner, which is able to provide a magnified look of your skin using a combination of sensors—producing an image similar to before and after shots of skincare advertisements. The SkinScanner is built with 12 high-powered LED lights, a 30x magnification lens and sensors that measure above and below the skin’s surface.

By pressing onto your face, the device captures the size and appearance of pores, the size and depth of fine lines and wrinkles, and determines skin’s moisture levels. With all this information the app rates your skin with a Skin360 Score, of up to 100, based on the skin of other users in your age range. This measure allows users to track the progress of skin issues within the app, as they treat their conditions by following the tips and instructions daily.

Controversy surrounding products like the SkinScanner have already been swirling around in the past, with gadgets like L’Oreal’s smart hairbrush. Dermatologists have been quick to point out that technology like it could potentially lead to unhealthy and obsessive behavior, while others have said that beauty companies simply want to sell more products.

Neutrogena’s app points users to a variety of its products in order to fix their skin and track their progress. Johnson & Johnson has said that in the future, the app could expand to offer products from any of its other skincare and beauty lines.

The $50 SkinScanner makes its debut this week at CES 2018, and it will be available for purchase online this summer.
