Urban Delivery Robots Make An Appearance At CES 2018
E-Novia's YAPE is the latest in a growing crop of self-driving delivery robots
The E-Novia YAPE—which stands for “Your Autonomous Pony Express”—is a self-driving robot designed to make deliveries in urban areas. Using a sophisticated mapping system and emitting zero emissions, it joins in the growing number of autonomous delivery robots.
YAPE runs on two wheels with a range of 50 miles. Its smart navigation system also “learns” as it gets around. What that means is YAPE uses its cameras and sensors to capture information such as traffic, potholes, accidents and construction sites to generate a real-time digital map that gets fed back and stored into a main system.
People use an app to schedule pickups and deliveries. YAPE can hold up to 154 pounds of packages. Designed and built in Italy, the robot has passed through its first phase of road testing and is on display this week at CES 2018.
