Foodles allows workers to access fresh meals in their office and supports RFID payments

The vending machine is usually the last resort when it comes to food options in most offices, but in Paris, one company is giving the concept a high-end makeover with its vending machine that serves workers with hot, fresh meals prepared by local chefs.

Created by French technology company Foodles, employees are able to order via a touchscreen on the face of the machine and choose from a variety of fresh options ranging from beef lasagna to quinoa salad. All meals are prepared by nearby restaurants or catering companies, with hot meals pre-cooked in advance and then chilled so they can be reheated in a microwave inside the vending machine. All meals are stocked daily, with menus changing weekly to keep employees from getting bored. Participating companies can also request specific meals depending on the preferences of those in the office.

When it comes time to paying for and keeping track of the meals inside the machine, Foodles makes use of RFID technology to enable seamless payments and easier restocking of items. Employees who work in an office with a Foodles machine simply need to tap an ID card on the NFC reader on the front of the machine, with each card linked to that employee’s prepaid account. Once the payment is confirmed, the door opens, allowing them to retrieve their meal. The technology also serves the dual purpose of allowing Foodles and participating workplaces to find out which items are most popular, when meals need to be restocked, or when items fall past their expiration date need to be removed.

Each unit holds about 200 meals, and is intended to serve a medium-sized office. According to Foodles, its technology can identify exactly how many meals are required at a certain location, helping to cut down on food waste, which it says is as low as 5% in most of its machines. The company says the idea has proven so popular it intends to start expanding and selling machines in other European countries, including the U.K., starting in 2018.
