The smart mobile disco can start a party anywhere, providing sound, lighting and fog effects

During the annual Salone del Mobile, or Milan Furniture Fair, finding an event space can be particularly competitive and challenging. Smart collaborated with designer Konstantin Grcic and audio equipment maker JBL on the idea of starting a party anywhere they wanted. The result is the smart mobile disco, a blend of microcar, utility truck and nightclub.

The smart mobile disco is a go-anywhere sound and lighting system based inside an all-electric smart EQ fortwo. Grcic lent his design skills to the project as well as personal inspiration from his time going to clubs in London in the 1990s.

Grcic had a few must have's on his list for the project. The car had to feature a real DJ, it had to have a rich sound system, and it needed to be easy to take the club experience to as many people as possible in a public space.

His solution was the addition of a boom lift fitted with a custom built DJ booth and theatrical lighting. JBL engineered a custom sound system for the car including a subwoofer box that helps counterweight the car when the boom is raised. A fog machine was installed behind the grille, and the car's headlights and taillights can be programmed to respond to the music.
