Snapchat’s Latest Lenses Let Users Game In Augmented Reality
Snappables marks the selfie-based social media platform's most recent development that lets people play and compete with friends in AR
Snapchat recently launched Snappables, an AR game that has users employ touch, motion and facial expressions to compete for high scores. Snappables will operate similarly to the platform’s Lenses—interactive filters that turn users into a hip-shaking grandma or an angel with a hilariously high pitched voice—but will additionally transform users’ faces and phone screens into a fully immersive game.
Snappables will include both high-score and competitive games that will eventually include letting gamers “fight aliens, start a rock band and play basketball” according to a Snap spokesperson.
Snapchat’s ventures into AR could mean big things for the company. Since it released Lenses in 2015, the app has risen to the top of the social media platforms and has remained distinct from more traditional ones. With the launch of Snappables and several of its other newer products, Snapchat has moved from simply sharing selfies and quick videos to transforming your phone into a hand-held online gaming station.
