Flexdrive's platform enables international car subscription providers like Sweden's Dribe to offer consumers more service, addressing growing consumer demand for mobility sharing and providing more alternatives to purchasing or leasing cars

Car subscription services can currently be broken largely into two categories: managed fleet businesses like Zipcar and manufacturer programs such as Care by Volvo or Book by Cadillac. These companies developed and operate their own subscription plans and apps, and the vehicles provided are company-owned. There is, however, another source of vehicles spreading around the world that could become the largest stock of shared cars and trucks, those being pre-owned and off-lease models. Many of these vehicles end up for sale at independent dealers who so far lack the resources to manage a subscription plan.

Technology provider Flexdrive is working to change that, offering dealers and fleet owners digital infrastructure to allow them to provide on-demand vehicle subscriptions to people through their mobile devices. The service creates an additional revenue stream for dealers and puts vehicles into use that would otherwise sit on a sales lot. At the time of writing, Flexdrive has partnered with vehicle providers in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey and South Florida. The company announced an expansion beyond the US market in a joint partnership with Denmark’s leading car subscription operator, Dribe.

Flexdrive offers many of the same benefits as other car subscription plans, including service and repair, insurance and roadside assistance. The service makes sense for longer-term use—a week or—month versus the hourly or daily model of Zipcar. The advantage the service has over manufacturer plans is that it’s more like a library and not just focused on a sole brand. The Dribe service in Denmark, for example, offers a choice of models from Audi and Volkswagen to Porsche and Lamborghini. Dribe even will begin to make Ducati motorcycles available for subscription use in the near future, meaning it might be eventually possible to drive an SUV to work during the week and trade it for a motorcycle to ride on the weekends, giving consumers ultimate flexibility and choice thanks to Flexdrive’s platform.
