McDonald’s is slowly starting to do away with the conventional fast food experience by implementing self-checkout kiosks into locations across the country. The fast-food chain’s goal is to have these devices available at every U.S. McDonald’s location by 2020.

McDonald’s isn’t the first corporation to begin work on automating the customer’s restaurant experience, but is joining where food and convenience retailers seem to be heading. Self-service checkout kiosks have been become more popular in the past decade as the consumer has become more independent and technology has risen to accommodate the need for convenience and speed. The establishment’s implementation of choice automation aims to keep costs low while also liberating human workers for tasks that are more meaningful, as retailers continue to search for an ideal integration of digital interfaces in their IRL locations.
